Installing Java on a Synology S210J CPU/Processor - Marvell mv6281 (88F6281) Arm v5 - Part 1
I’ve just bought one of these amazing-seeming Synology S210J Raid storage NAS (the included Linux-based software looks AMAZING, try it out for yourself). Remote web Access (iPhone/Android included), BT clients, CCTV-via-usb, and Linux, it looks like a cool box of tricks.
Although it hasn’t arrived yet, I’ve already looked into installing Java+servlet+maven-repository on the low powered device (Arm v5 CPU running at 800mhz with just 128mb ram). Seems that it might have been slightly easier to do this on older Synology hardware as they were based on PPC (PowerPC) CPU’s, but all is not lost.
Oracle/Sun has, hidden in its site, arm based fully-compatible Java 6 SE JRE’s. The S210J will most probably require the Arm v5 Java JRE binary, according to the Marvell’s mv6281 CPU documentation.
Although targeted mainly at PPC, this post outlines the installation of Java onto a previous Synology product (Synology appear to be well known for maintaining software compatibility across a wide range of new and old products).
NB. It seems that the Arm JRE is a 90 day evaluation version. However, a post, outlining a previous version (jre 1.4.2), seems to suggest the duration as a ‘formality’, requiring nothing more than the removal of a ‘dot-lock’ file, possibly named/numbered like the JRE install itself, within the <JRE-install>/lib/arm directory ;-)
Part 2 to come once I’ve actually installed Java on the S210J.
